Tart Making

I can't believe how long it has been since I have posted on this site. I have had several email about making tarts, this is how I do it.

First I take about 20 oz. of soy wax, use your scale to weigh the wax. I use a candy thermometer from Walmart. I like to use the para/soy wax from www.kentuckywax.com for my tarts. I used to use only soy wax, but they are so soft and crumble after a while. This para/soy wax has a mixture of parafin and soy. They still burn really clean.

I add my color in while it is melting. Some wait until after it is melted. I buy the dye blocks for my tarts. I don't like the liquid, too messy. Just shave off however much you need for the color.

Heat your wax until it reaches 175. Take off the heat, and let cool, until reaches about 145. Add 2 0zs. of fragrance in the mixture and stir well. Make you stir for a minute or two.

If you want to add spices and such to your tarts, have your cups ready to go. I like to add cinnamon chips, whole cloves and crushed rosehips to some of my tarts. I like to use the 2 0z. portion cups for my tarts, then you can just pop the lid on and make a label with the scent. Those priority boxes come in handy for setting on the counter. I always seem to spill wax when pouring. so these really keep the mess down.

Pour hot wax into cups and let sit, until it starts to skin over, then you may want to add some spices on top of the hot wax. If you wait till it skins over, they won't sink to the bottom. It best to let the tarts cure for at least week, before burning. I hope this helps, it really is all about testing which scents are strongest for you. Alot of trial and error, but very addicting to make.

I finally got this one in e-pattern form, going to spend weekend trying to get more transferred over to e-patterns. I don't know where the time goes. Hoping to get some bunnies made for my daughters show. I am making them for my daughters show in Moultrie Georgia at the Calico arts and crafts show March 18-19. If I sell them, they will donated to her wedding fund. Well check back in a few days for an update on e-patterns.

Sorry it has been so long on this blog. Being sick, sure limits what I can do. I did manage to get some of my lighted boxes done this past week. I have 3 big shows coming up and not enough inventory. the first set of boxes are from my #272 Winter Welcome light. I have had these boxes in my shed for several years.

Next I got 3 of my Christmas Blessings #284 also finished. These boxes always sell great at the shows.

I have the following patterns now in epattern form.

Finger tutorial and 2 new Patterns

Well I finally got 2 more patterns done, I am trying to get most of the new items finished, because show season starts in less than 2 months. So I need to have everything done. Here is the first one I finished up. I call this one Winter Magic. He is a quick and easy project to do. So simple to make.

Next, I have a lot of request for Prairie dolls, and here is my latest version of one. I call this one Hannah's Christmas tree. She is about 24" long and is holding a prim trim. This one really makes up fast.

I have alot of ladies emailing asking how to stuff those fingers. Love the look, but I hate to stuff fingers. Here is how I do it.

I sew my hand and I use a chopstick and push up the finger back into the hand part. See picture below

Push each finger back into hand.

When you have all pushed up into hand as shown,

Push your chopstick up into one of the fingers in the middle and gently push the hand up into the arm. You Keep pushing until you reach the opening. then pull out all the fingers from opening.

then I just use small bits of stuffing and push up into the fingers until you have them all stuffed.

Hope this helps, everyone has their own way of turning and stuffing, but this is best way that works for me.

Booth tips

In this post, I am going to show you past show booth pictures, compared to our booth today. As you will see, we have come a long way. A lot of hard work to get your booth to look the way you want. This is what our booth looks like today. My hubby built it, out of pressure treated lumber, so it is really heavy.

I bought a cupboard to hold my room sprays and a shelf that comes apart. I use lots of wood crates, rusty buckets and basket sto hold anything on the floor. I now decorate the top of the booth with greenery. Last year I had an old braided rug I threw down. But be sure you tape it down, or you may have an injured customer.

At the Christmas shows, I always have a basket with peppermint candy for anyone to pick up. Always have business cards to give out.

A big turnoff for me, is to go into a booth, and immediately have the crafter start trying to sell their work to you or not have it priced. I like to look without having someone behind me talking to me the whole time, trying to get me to buy. I usually just walk out without buying when that happens. I am kind of a shy person, I usually just greet my customer and tell them, just ask if you need any help. This works for me, your work will sell itself.

I can't help but laugh, while going through some old photos. I found some of my older shows, now we are talking 20 years ago at least. I am posting some of the old photos, they are not the best photos, didn't have a decent camera back then.

This one was at an old shopping mall. I had just the one folded display and a small card table. Rule number one, never use sheets on a table, use old quilts or good table coverings. I noticed in some of my old pictures, the sheets were blowing could see boxes and sawhorse legs. Not professional at all.

as you can see in this one, overlapping sheets, boxes and table legs showing. I remember the doing the crochet cotton ornaments that you starch and stiffen. They on the black display board. What you can't see on the table are crocheted and wood items. This booth says Bazaar.

This was one of first big shows at the Morocco Temple shrine auditorium. This used to be a really good show. The first year we were in it, we caused a traffic jam and they had to move us to the side room the next year, which worked out great, we had more room, but as you can see here, we did mostly ornaments no extras in our booth for display.

The one and only mall show we ever did. I will never willingly do a mall show again. They don't come to the mall to buy crafts. 4 long miserable days. I had a friend with me, who everytime I would sell something, she would take her elbow and elbow me. A little noticable, she got a little excited about selling, but kind of embarassing, especially when the customer notices.

My booth at the Christmas made in the South Show in Jacksonville, back then we had a single booth. Looking at the picture, we sure didn't have much inventory. But we also had a crowded booth, and people saying we needed to get a double booth. Now I don't like to have anything but a double booth.

This year I am going to change my booth, my current one is just too heavy for my hubby to handle by himself anymore. My daughter doesn't get to go with me to all my shows now. So it just me and him. So I have to come up a new prim look, that is a lot easier to handle. I will share the new booth with you when I get it finished.

HOW TO USE AN IRON TO GET A GRUNGY LOOK ON YOUR FABRIC

Hi,

I get a lot of emails asking how to get that uneven grungy look on stitches and wings. Here is how I do it. First off, let me warn you not to use a good iron. I bought an old iron from a garage sale that I used for this.

I take a spray bottle, and mix a strong mixture of instant coffee and warm water, shake real good.

Take your piece, I don't even use a stained piece of muslin, just do my stitcheries and wings with unstained muslin.Spray mixture on front of piece and immediately iron with your hot iron. Just keep ironing until you get it dry. If you want it darker, just keep spraying and ironing. Repeat for back of wing if desired. This is a easy way to get a grungy look.

You notice, I used a thick piece of cardboard under my wing piece as I ironed. This way I can just throw it away and not get my ironing board cover all stained and dirty looking.

New Pattern and Beard Tutorial

Well, finally got another new pattern finished and my tutorial on Santa Beards done. Here is my newest pattern. I call this one Christmas Cans. I have a bunch of rusty cans sitting around, never used and wanted something quick and easy to put in them. The label graphics are included in the pattern. Click on the side button to purchase.

Here is the way I do my Santa beards,I doing a Santa makedo in this lesson:

Start with head already blushed and stained.

Take a small clump, and using a needle felting needle. Place the beard in the position you want and jab the needle up and down,until beard is secure.

Continue working on one side.

then go to other side and add a piece of beard.

I like to work, going back and forth to each side, to make sure I have it even.

Continue up the side of the heads.

When you get to top of the head, I fold it half and put a part in the middle, I needlefelt the middle of the strip of wool. It looks like it is parted.

Continue down the side of the head.

Now for moustache, take a clump and find the middle.

And then lay it on the face, where you want the moustache to be and jab up and down with your needle until it is secure.

Now take a small piece for eyebrow, roll it in your fingers until is kind of tight. and place on the head and jab in to place.

now you see the completed head, ready for me to add the eyes.

Once I found the felting needle, I no longer hot glued the beards on. This is much easier.Hope this helps, if you have any questions, just let me know.

New Annie Pattern Available

I finally got another pattern ready. I have been busy getting my new line ready for the Olde Country Cupboard site, that I neglected the You are Special site. I had new graphics added to this site. Hope you will go take a look.

This pattern is called #315 Annie's Lil' Frog. She is about 16" tall and holds a little painted muslin frog. I don't usually make spring patterns, I love making fall and winter items. But I have to say, I really like her. This is some fabric that I have had for years, back when my daughter was still young enough to like fabric like this. She is 19 years old, almost 20.

I have had a lot of people email about the yarn I use for doll hair. I buy my yarn at JoAnn's etc. I have put a picture of yarn below. The color number is #135, two different styles by the same company. One is just a little thicker than the other.

Well, I still have more dolls to get made, before I can get back to crafting for my shows. I will have a tutorial on Santa beards once I get caught on orders.

Been busy working on dolls, I remade my angel Annie doll for the newest issue of Country Sampler. It is amazing how just changing the dress can make a pattern look completely different. I have had several orders for her.

I had quite of few request for a tutorial on beards, that is next on the list. So please keep watching, just have to get these dolls finished up and then I can start working on what I want to work on.

How to age with Brown shoe paste polish

I have had several emails asking how to grungy up a doll, this is a technique that I use. But please practice first, so you don't ruin your dolls.

I have been using the brown shoe paste polish in can, that I purchase from Walmart, to help my get my dolls

a little grungier looking.

So here is how I get it look a little aged. I start with muslin that has been dyed with the liquid tan Ritt dye. Just follow the manufacturer's instructions on the bottle. I finish my doll and have her looking like this.

First off, I blush the cheeks with dark powdered blush.

she now looks like this.

This is picture of the brown shoe paste polish I buy.

I like to use a wad of cotton or stuffing and wipe some paste onto the cotton. Be careful, not to get too much on the cotton, you may streak your doll's face and ruin it. So practice first.

Take your wad of cotton and lightly rub over the face and go in a circular motion on the cheeks.

Just lightly rub all over the face.

Hopefully you can tell the difference from this picture, from the unfinished to finished.

I like to lightly blush the back of the hands, then rub the polish over the hands and arms that are showing.

I painted the feet with black acrylic paint and sanded them lightly.

Rub over the legs with shoe paste polish, the same as for the rest of body.

Well, hope you can use this technique on your crafting. I love be able to put shoe polish on the doll's clothes, you don't have to wait for it dry and can see immediate results with the polish. It has a smell for a couple of hours, then smell goes away.

Annie's Snowman pattern ready and doll's I have been working on

I have been busy making dolls, that are currently advertised in the Country Sampler this month. I had quite a few orders for them. It seems as soon as I get them made, they sell. I still have to make the Easter eggs for the blue Annies. The other Annie, is my #290 Annie's Memories doll, this is an older pattern, but always sells well when I advertise her.

I finally got the new Annie's Snowman pattern done, it is ready in e-pattern form or mailed version, just look in the side bar for the pattern. This was a bigger pattern to put into e-pattern form, so if you have any problems with it, please let me know.I really like the way she turned out, I have a couple of new ideas for more Annies, in the works, of course, most of the are Christmas Annies. But I do want to make a patriotic Annie, it won't be long until summer.'

Sno-Folks remake, Free Easter Stitchery tags pattern and box end corner tutorial

I have been having several orders lately, from one of my older patterns. I decided to make a set today and update it a little. I had forgotten how much I like these when I used to make them. I used to sell these wholesale through a rep and had to make so many of them, I got burnt out on them. But I think I might actually bring them back this year to my show. I am going to take some of the older patterns and put them in e-pattern form and offer them on the blog for a special price, until the next one comes out, so please keep checking back for the pattern special. It will only last time I get the next one ready. I am offering the sno-folks pattern for the special price of $4.00. While making the Sno-folks, it helped me to decide which technique to share next. The first time I did the box ends, I couldn't figure it out. Spent half a day trying, when all of a sudden it clicked. So here goes if you are having trouble figuring out how to do it: First off, trace your pattern onto doubled fabric, leaving an opening for turning.

Trim you piece leaving about 1/8" around.

Take your piece and fold the bottom seam toward the side seams, it should look like this on the bottom. Notice how the sides are pulled out.

You can see how the corners are sticking out.

Place on sewing machine and stitch across corner.

Continue on to other side of body and you will now have both corners stitched across.

This is how you piece will look before you turn it.

Hope this helps if you have been having trouble with the corners. These are the sno-folk bodies shown at the top.

Pattern Giveaway and How to pinch stitch

I have several people call me and ask how to the do the pinch stitch on the nose. I find it hard to describe how to do some of the techniques over the phone. So hoping this will help.

I drew the lines on this doll, with a black marker, as I going to paint her black. But knot your needle and insert needle in back of head, coming out where you want to start your stitch.

Take your hand and kind of pinch it together and insert your needle under the mark and picking up a little stuffing come out on other side of line.

You can see in the pictures the finished eyebrows, just run your needle down to the starting point at top of the nose and start pinching your nose and do the same, picking up alittle more stuffing to make is stand out more.

Just continue on the mouth and when you are finished stitching, just knot off.

All done and now ready to paint. This was the doll from my newest pattern at the Olde Country Cupboard.

I am sorry it has taken so long to update. I am having trouble getting ahold of the winner of the bagholder, If any one knows Country Pickins please let me know how to get in touch with her. Or if you are reading this please email me at info@youarespecialpatterns.com. I don't think my emails have been getting through. Been working on some new stuff. I just finished a new Annie pattern, I am going to call her Annie's Snowman. She is a big girl. She is a little on the bright side, I used lots of reds on her. I have aloy\t of people ask wher I buy my yarn for my doll's hair. I buy it at Joann's. They have skeins of yarn that are perfect for raggedy's.

I have been asked how I stuff my doll's, I tried taking some pics, hopefully these will explain how I do it. I had to take myself stuffing, so hope they make sense.

I have my doll body sewn up, just have to turn it and then stuff it.

I use a chop stick, I grab some stuffing and kind of wrap it around the end of the chopstick and then stuff down into the leg or arm. Just keep adding a little at time until you get stuff firmly. I kind of flatten the stuffing down as I go. I just mash down on the outside and try to keep flat and from bunching out.

Next I stuff the body and head, I stuff with little bunches of stuffing. I use the stuffing in the green and white box at Walmart, not the polyfil, that is too soft, I can't stuff tight enough with it. Just keep pressing the doll body flat as you go with your hands, to keep it flat.

Do you ever get a wobbly neck, this is one trick I use to help keep the head from flopping too much,

take a stitch under the neck line, going from back to front with heavy thread.

After you have stitch back and forth a couple of times, knot off your thread, you will have an indentation there. Just continue to stuff around the body and stitch.

I like to fold the bottom seam up and stitch my doll's legs into the opening and whipstitch closed. I don't use a machine stitch across. Just have to be careful to keep the legs even at the bottom. I hope this helps a little, I have stuffed a ton of dolls over the years and I have noticed no one stuffs the same, the same doll can look so different depending on who stuffs it.

Doll hair and how I attach to doll's head

I have been emailed several times, wanting to know how to attach doll hair. This is the way I do it.

I cut the yarn to the desired length. I insert my needle into the first place I want to start attaching hair.

I usually put 4 or 5 pieces together, depending on the thickness of the yarn.

I fold the clump of yarn in half to find the middle.

Keeping the yarn folded, insert your threaded needle through yarn clump, be sure to go under entire group, come back around and insert back into head where you started and knot it, but don't cut thread. Depending how tight you stitched it to the head, you may want to put a couple of stitches to secure. Just insert your needle back into the head and come up in the next place you want to attach a clump of hair.

you can see how I keep coming up at the next point where i want to attach, when you have the desired amount, just knot off and secure your thread. Trim the ends if needed.

Well, I hope this helps, it is sometimes hard to explain things, but hoping these pictures give you an idea of how I attach the hair.

#312 Annie and Her Easter Eggs

Well, this is my first post here, I won't be posting a lot on this one, probably not more than once a week, this one is just for my new items I am going to add to the You are Special website, I kind of been a little lazy on this site. http://www.youarespecialpatterns.com/ so I need to get busy adding more patterns.

I think I have finally managed to figure out e-patterns, I made up my first pattern called Annies Easter Eggs and I am offering here on the blog for $4.00. this is a test run, so it you have any problems, just let me know. Just click on the side button on the blog for the pattern. This special price is only available on the blog for a limited time. It won't be added to my website until later on in the week.
On this blog, I am going to try to give you all some tips and techniques that I have learned through trial and error. I will also keep you up to date on new patterns on the You are Special pattern line. I am going to try to have e-patterns available for any new patterns that come out. I have a couple of new patterns coming out this month, the Annies and her eggs, Seasonal Annie: this pattern includes an Easter, Fall and Christmas version.

I learned along time ago, that some things I took for granted when sewing, others didn't know or hadn't realized what I meant. I once asked a friend to cut out some felt ornaments pieces, I told her I needed 2 of each one, thinking that she would place two pieces of the felt together and cut them out a one time, but no, she cut each piece out separately and needless to say, I didn't have any pieces that matched when I tried to handstitch them together. So now I try to be very concise when I give instructions to people to do handsewing and finished items. But I have to say, I am very picky and don't like to have any one else sew for me as I like the way I finish items. I tried it once and the shop keeper that wholesaled from me asked me if I sewed these. So I learned the hard way. Do it myself.

Some tips that might come in helpful:

1. When you want to pre-shrink fabric before cutting out your pattern, zig-zag or serge the raw edges of the fabric. This prevents the fabric from fraying in the wash.

2. When threading a needle, don't moisten the end of the thread as this will cause it to swell up and make the job more difficult.

3. Always wash your muslin before you dye it, this will help it absorb the dye better.

Some of the questions I have been asked is How do I tea-stain. I used to use tea bags, but now I use the liquid tan Ritt dye in a bottle. I buy it at Walmart. Just follow the instructions on the bottle. Let it dry, I use the clothesline, iron it to get most of the wrinkles out when dry. I make my doll, and if I want her a little more stained after I have finished her, I have a spray bottle with a mixture of coffee and water that I spray her down with. Be sure you take a cloth and smooth her face good after you have sprayed her, her face won't be blotchy that way. Another way is too lightly spray the body with coffee/water mixture and take a hot iron and iron it dry. This will give it a grungier or dirtier look, but practice first. This is the method I use on my stitcheries. I stitch the design onto fabric backed with warm and natural. Then take my spray mixture and spray on the stitched piece and iron it dry. I keep spraying the areas I want darker and ironing them dry till I get the look the I want.

I just got my latest pattern finished, this one is going to be in the new issue of Country Sampler, I call her Seasonal Annie. This pattern features a 20" raggedy with three different variations, fall, Christmas and Easter. I made quite a few of the gingerbread Annies at Christmas and sold them all as fast I put them out.

I have lots of new ideas and hope this year goes much better and I can get everything done that is on my list. Which by the way, keeps growing every day.
